To encourage the active participation of the faithful in the liturgy, the faithful are encouraged to join the choir to sing the Kyriale and Credo during Mass. These are usually sung in Gregorian Chant. This page is to assist you to learn the music commonly used in the Auckland Latin Mass Chaplaincy.

Asperges

The Asperges occurs at the beginning of the principal Mass on each Sunday. While the celebrant sprinkles Holy Water, the Asperges Me or Vidi Aquam (during Paschaltide) is sung.

Kyriale

The Kyriale is also known as the ordinary or Mass settings of the Mass.
These are the prayers that forms the structure of the Mass. In a High (or Solemn High) Mass, singing of the Kyriale is often overlapped with the actions of the priests at the altar.

The Kyriale consists of the:

  • Kyrie – Lord have mercy
  • Gloria – Glory to God
  • Sanctus – Holy, Holy, Holy
  • Agnus Dei – Lamb of God

Different Kyriale are used for specific liturgical seasons. Below are the six Mass settings commonly used in the Auckland Latin Mass Chaplaincy.

Credo

After the sermon on Sunday or any 1st Class feasts, the Credo (Creed) is sung, this is the summary of the Catholic faith. Most Sundays in the Auckland Latin Mass Chaplaincy, Credo III is sung, on more solemn occasions, Credo I (which is a more ancient tone) is used.

Marian Antiphons

A Marian Antiphon is sung at the beginning of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament or at the end of Compline. There are four Marian Antiphons used in different season. Each antiphon comes with a simple or solemn tone.
